They Used To Build Ships Here - Special

Our first cask special offering for 2025 honours the North East's shipbuilding legacy. Sitting at 4.2%, the beer is a modern take on the classic English bitter, and is as robust as the magnificent vessels once crafted on our rivers. With an aroma of berries and candied orange, the well-rounded base malts produce a warming cereal flavour, further enhanced with grape and gooseberry notes imparted by Mosaic® and Harlequin® hops.

Pump clip for They Used To Build Ships Here

The clip artwork features an illustration of the RMS Mauretania being constructed at the Swan Hunter yard, which was located on the River Tyne in Wallsend, Newcastle Upon Tyne. The Mauretania was the largest ship in the world at the time it was built and served from 1907-1934.

The North East was a giant of the shipbuilding industry, with the first records dating all the way back to the late 1200s, and taking off significantly during the 19th century at the height of the industrial revolution. There were over 400 shipyards alone on the River Wear in Sunderland throughout its history. Launched in 2003, Largs Bay was the last full ship to be built here, after which the Swan Hunter yard was sadly closed in November 2006, marking the end of the shipbuilding era in the North East of England.
